11 things you might not know about Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series
I chatted with Diana Gabaldon just before the Outlander series hit the airwaves and part of our conversation centered around things her fans might not know about her. Here, some tantalizing tidbits, including her fave Doctor Who (the character of Jamie was inspired by a kilt-wearing Doctor), what she enjoys doing when she isn't writing, and more.
1. What do you love about writing?
The sheer joy of creating something that wasn’t there before.
2. Hate about writing?
Deadlines. I don’t know why I say that, because I don’t actually allow deadlines to get in my way.
3. When it’s not all about writing what do you enjoy?
Reading or sex, depending on the time of day!
4. What character from literature would you love to meet?
Lord Peter Wimsey [from the Dorothy L. Sayers books].
5. Best book you’ve read recently?
Phil Rickman’s The Magus of Hay.
6. Best Doctor Who?
7. Fave gift to give?
Dates. We have this company in Phoenix called the Sphinx Date Ranch (http://www.sphinxdateranch.com/), and they do these fabulous assortments of dates—rolled in coconut or stuffed with walnuts or dipped in chocolate—and I give them to everyone for Christmas.
8. Best gift you’ve ever gotten?
A pretty spectacular diamond bracelet my husband tracked down. He went to some trouble to find it and have all the stones appraised, so he could haggle for it effectively. He got that for me a couple of years ago.
9. Favourite vacation getaway?
10. Best advice you ever got?
I usually don’t pay attention to advice! But my father used to say to me, You’re such a poor judge of character, you’re bound to marry some bum, be sure you get a good education so you can support your children. I remember that!
11. Best thing about your life?
